Justin & Mary: Walk Through a Wedding

Happy post 4th of July, everyone! I trust you all had a relaxing and enjoyable holiday and are not missing any of your digits this morning. This is the first year that fireworks have been legal for purchase in Maine and let’s just say I’m a little worried to watch the news this week to hear all the stories of injuries that occured last night…but I digress. It’s also very tough to go back to work today. Having the holiday off in the middle of the week doesn’t make for coming back to the office a very exciting experience. All that will change at the end of this month once I am officially self-employed and my “office” the cozy, green room in the corner of my house where I attempt to make all this magic happen, is where I get to go everyday. But again…I digress. THAT is a topic for another day and one that I will be writing about very soon.

What I DO have for you today is to share with you my experiences at a recent workshop at attended in New Haven, CT with international wedding photographers, Justin & Mary Marantz. Justin & Mary have one of the top wedding photography businesses on the east coast and their “Walk Through A Wedding” workshops have been held all over the world. For this one last month, we had the honor of being invited into their own home, which is RIGHT on the Long Island Sound (it is breathtaking and I could wake up to the view everyday). This was an intensive, two day, jammed packed workshop. The first day was 100% hands on. Shoot this, light that, try this lens, look for angles…it was amazing. What these two had to teach us has dramatically changed the way I look at light and how I shoot weddings. We started at their house with lots of hands on learning then it was off to the ceremony (remember, we were treating this like a real wedding!). So it was a loooonngg day. Our bride and groom, Lara & Peter (real life husband and wife and past Justin & Mary clients from this fall) were an absolute joy to work with. It’s funny, because when I got there I was so excited and shocked to see Lara! I had no idea that she and Peter were the models for the day. I had the pleasure of meeting Lara for the first time when she joined my friend Alex at my house to take my maternity photos in the winter of 2011. So seeing her was such a joy! So back to the day! After some ceremony tips at a delightful, quintessential New England church, it was off to the reception location, The Bee & Thistle Inn. There, we worked with our models on posing, lighting and really capturing the essence of your couple’s personality. And I can’t forget Michelle and Deb, our lovely bridesmaids for the day. They were great!

That…was a 12 hour day. We were beat, but so inspired.

Day 2 was strictly business…literally. We spent the whole day learning from Justin & Mary about valuable business strategies, setting big goals and defining what they call “the WHY.” Why do you do what you do? Why do you take that photo? Why is the dress placed where it is? Why why why? This was an invaluable discussion and something that I am continually fine-tuning for my business.

At the end of the two days I knew that going into business full time for myself was the right decision and I could not be more inspired to take this next step. And to Mary and Justin, thank you for opening your home and heart and for being so giving of your time and your knowledge. With all the time, laughs and tears that this small group shared over the course of the two days, I am happy to not just have great new colleagues, but to also have some great new friends.

If you are a photographer and are interested in attending one of their workshops, check out their WTAW website for more information.

Enjoy the photos!
